According to a joint statement from the two companies, the reference designs are based on the Octeon MIPS64 processor family and Renesas Quad-TCAMs.

These reference designs target high-end router and switch applications. Renesas Technology Corporation and Cavium Networks Renesas said they will separately and jointly market the new reference designs to their OEM customers.

The reference designs, the two companies said, consist of board designs along with optimised software drivers, APIs, and example applications. The combination addresses an array of applications, including deep packet inspection, packet forwarding, as well as security management and quality of service, according to the companies.
