BANGALORE: Corporate India has demonstrated that it can take change in its stride. Having developed effective strategies despite challenges, the transformation of India to meet global competitiveness by its ability to manage change effectively, has been phenomenal.

Speaking on the 13th Quality Summit organized by CII on New waves of change, Subodh Bhargava, Chairman, VSNL stated, " Technology has been an instrument of change. There must exist a synergy in technology, environment and society. Change in any of these elements will impact the other. A balance between these is necessary."

"Today there is a growing consciousness amongst corporate India about the relationship between the above factors. IT having led the boom for the country, the world is looking at India for services and manufacturing."

Reiterating that India is now recognized as a global market, he added, "The slack has been removed from the manufacturing industry. Today there are several companies who have become global suppliers."

Technology has revolutionized the corporate world. Quoting Baba Kalyani, he said companies should adapt 'common sense manufacturing'. He elaborated " Use blue collar workers for application of mind, rather than for mechanical work'.

Lamenting that India is heading towards a crisis of 'gurus', he said," There are not enough resources to build teachers in academic institutions and scientists with competence for R&D. R&D cannot be tackled by slogans. There should be a paradigm shift towards encouraging R&D and academicians to work together"

He quoted the example of GE, which has taken the lead and has set an example in this regard where salaries for R&D employees is on par with non R&D employees. Over 120 multi national companies have set R&D base in India.

He enumerated four elements to cope with changes and challenges in the corporate world. The first was more efficient use of information technology. "IT deployment should be stepped up. Currently the use of IT has been limited in the corporate world." He urged the corporates to use IT for CRM, decision-making and analysis.

He continued, "Communication technologies have also improved tremendously within India and across the seas. Today it is possible to envisage seamless connectivity between 300 distributors or the sales team of a company on a common live network."

The second challenge was about making India the R&D lab of the world. He noted that Indian should now move from the tag of back office of the world to laboratory of the world. He stressed that, "The ownership of Intelluctual Property should lie with India.

The third challenge according to him was managing talent." "Talent management is crucial for growth of industries. Talent should be managed at every level such as managerial and work force. It is most important to manage talent right from childhood level. There is a demographic change in our countries' work force. This young workforce has to be tapped and channelised effectively towards managing change," he said

The fourth factor according to Bhargava was the ability to make our organizations cost effective."
