"The project initiated first time in India by the transport department was fully successful and have already been effectively implemented in all the districts," said Punjab's Transport Minister, Ajit Singh Kohar.

According to Kohar, the digitisation of the transport department would include registration at dealers' desk, online payment of fee and taxes, licenses at educational institutes. With the roll out of this project, people are now less dependent on officers, explains Kohar.

With the roll out of the e-governance project, Punjab is the first state in the country to have introduced Smart Card facility for driving licences and certificates for registration of vehicles, claims the Transport Minister.

The concept of paperless office has been introduced in all field offices. Other facilities include web based payment of taxes and fee and an online system for vehicle registration at dealer point.
