The average number of erstwhile HP employees who have been applying for a job
in Sun Microsystems has doubled during the last three weeks prior to the
completion of Compaq's merger with HP. This trend was revealed by Sun’
executive vice president and chief HR officer, Crawford Beveridge.
According to Beveridge, in the last six months nearly 3,375 HP employees
worldwide had applied for jobs at Sun. "We’ve been getting resumes for a
while from them. Recently, we did a statistical study," Beveridge said.
"And we found that for the last six months we were getting 125 resumes a
week from HP employees. This went up steeply in the last three weeks when we’ve
been receiving an average of 250 resumes a week." However, Beveridge on his
first visit to India as Sun chief HRO, could not give any India specific
figures.
Crawford also said that the company had been receiving resumes from Compaq
employees but in far lower numbers. From erstwhile Compaq, Sun receives "an
average of 40 resumes a week in the last six months that went up to 60 resumes a
week three weeks ago," he said.
The uncertainty surrounding the merger and CEO Carly Fiorina’s declaration
last year that 15,000 employees from the new HP would have to be laid off, has
triggered a certain amount of apprehension among HP employees in recent months.
The new HP is yet to announce the details of the job cuts it has planned.
