LONDON, UK: With power requirements on the increase, mobile handset makers are finding it difficult to zero in on any possible kind of technology that can fully address the need for more power in handsets.

According to studies by market research firm IMS Research, solutions that emerge for bridging the power gap required by added handset features and available handset battery capacity are unlikely to solve the increasing and worrying problem.

An EETimes report quoting IMS Research said that consumers are unlikely to pay too much for features that they know will only drain their battery. Such a situation could prove to be bad as this could lead to a downward pressure on prices for handset OEMs.

It is also reported that solutions keep happening and they include new display technologies, more power efficient silicon design, and new battery chemistries. All these boast of varying market potential. However, these don’t translate into solutions for some reason or the other.

It has been estimated that power requirements for smart phone users will increase at a rate of 15 per cent rate each year. Further, the power gap will increase at a significantly higher pace. Studies have indicated that of the two key drivers of increased power consumption among handset users, one of them means that consumers are doing more with their handsets than ever before with mobile data and application use is zooming beyond anything.

Meanwhile, feature rich applications have made also come into handsets more than ever before. What is significant is that research estimates point out that many smart phone users only have a battery life of 6 hours, the study findings said.
