BANGALORE, INDIA: MediaTek, a major among handset chipmakers and the fabless semiconductor company for wireless communications and digital multimedia solutions, is looking at expanding its PA suppliers by sourcing power amplifiers (PAs) from Silicon Storage Technology (SST), and also Skyworks.

IC industry sources believe that the move comes following MediaTek's move aimed at pocketing an added share of the white-box handset market. This is also targeted at doing away with dependence on a single supplier.

As per the new move, SST will start providing PAs for MediaTek's entry-level 2.5G handset chips. Sources believe that this move may work for the company's TD-SCDMA chips targeting China's 3G handset market in the future. It is also expected that SST would enter the supply chains of MediaTek's partners with its NOR flash products.

It may be recalled that ARM had last week said that MediaTek Inc has licensed the ARM Mali-400 MP multicore graphics processing unit (GPU) for its system-on-chip (SoC) technology.

MediaTek licensed the Mali-400 MP GPU for its SoC products, sources added. This technology is seen as enabling MediaTek to deliver high graphics performance and graphics rendering with low power consumption.

According to MediaTek officials, “the company has chosen to license ARM Mali technology for its scalability and performance credentials.” They added that it is vital that MediaTek is able to achieve flexibility in its product portfolio in this regard.
