The platform would enable digital audio in a variety of audio devices.

"The product is going to enable its users to store thousands of songs in a

stereo or music system and then access those songs from anywhere," said

PortalPlayer vice president Jeff Hawkey.

The firm is developing base-level platform for next generation MP3-type

player/recorder systems, including hybrid systems combining CD and digital audio

player/recorders, and hard drive equipped digital audio jukeboxes.

The platform has been developed at the company’s development center in

Hyderabad, with 60 out of a total of 90 people working on the third generation

product. "This platform would provide OEMs with the necessary software and

highly integrated, single-chip engine to build fully featured systems supporting

multiple codecs, encryption standards, and digital rights management

technologies," he added.

The company is hoping to release the platform worldwide early next year.

"Initially we would be looking at the markets in Japan, Taiwan and China,

and later shift focus on the US market as there is a good opportunity to expand

this platform," added Jeff.

PortalPlayer offers a base platform for next generation entertainment

products such as portable digital music devices, general audio systems and

streaming audio receivers.
