PM to kick-start Digital India week today

MUMBAI, INDIA: In a style that is now synonymous with him, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will formally launch the Digital India initiative via video conferencing, today.

Some of the key services expected to be launched include the Digital Locker, e-eduction and e-health.

As a start, the PM will launch the services in ten village panchayats around Delhi. Six hundred more districts across the country will organize various programs to create awareness about the ongoing activities under the Digital India platform.

Some of the industry magnates expected to join the PM on the dais are Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries; Anil Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Group; Cyrus P Mistry, Chairman, Tata Sons; Sunil Mittal, Chairman and Group CEO, Bharti Enterprises; Kumarmangalam Birla, Chairman, Aditya Birla Group; Anil Agarwal, Sterlite Technologies; Azim Premji, Chairman, Wipro Group; Pawan Munjal, Hero Group; Mikio Katayama, Hari Om Rai, Chairman and MD, Lava International and Peter Gutsmeidl, CEO, Airbus Group.

The goal of the mission is to leverage technology for common people, said Ravi Shankar Prasad, Communications and IT Minister, and added, "We are promoting electronic manufacturing. India can become a good destination of electronics manufacturing hub, resulting in billions of dollars in investments and several lakh jobs."

The government had last year approved the Digital India program comprising various projects worth over Rs 1 lakh crore to transform the country into a digitally empowered knowledge economy.

It must be recalled that the PM announced the initiative which is primarily targeted at connecting the gram panchayats by using broadband Internet and for faster e-governance and related services.

The Ministry of Communications and IT is the nodal agency to implement the program.
