Worldwide shipments of PCs may still be sinking but analysts believe that all's not lost yet and the PC market may stabilize soon. Both Gartner and IDC have reported a decline in PC shipments at 4.3 percent and 3.3 percent year-over-year in the second quarter respectively, however, IDC is optimistic as the fall is not as drastic as it was once.

If we look at the fourth quarter of 2015, PC shipments dropped 10.6 percent to 71.9 million, far faster than today. "Amid some unevenness in market trends across the regions, the global PC market has continued to trend toward stabilization," said Jay Chou, research manager, IDC Worldwide Personal Computing Device Tracker.

"Despite recent issues wrought by component shortages and its effect on system prices, we expect the momentum of commercial market replacements will contribute to eventual market growth. Consumer demand will remain under pressure, although growth in areas like PC gaming and the increasingly attractive portfolio of sleek Windows-based systems will help push the consumer market to stabilize as well," he added.

HP was the leading PC manufacturer in both the reports with Lenovo taking the second spot. While IDC said that HP’s PC shipments rose 6.2 percent year-over-year to 13.8 million, Gartner said HP’s shipments grew 3.3 percent to 12.7 million.

Dell came in third in both the reports with Apple coming in fourth.
