Over 6 million GSM subscriber addition in March

NEW DELHI: Once again the GSM subscriber base made a mark in the industry with more than 6.13 million new additional subscribers in March reaching the total base to 121 million.

This is the highest ever subscriber addition for the GSM industry since its inception. The cumulative all India GSM subscriber base has now grown to 121 million in March 2007, up from 115 million in February 2007 recording a growth of about 5 per cent during the month of March 07.

“We are delighted at the pace of subscriber growth which has been primarily driven by ever increasing subscriber demand for the GSM service,” T.V. Ramachandran, Director General, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) said.

He said that the spurt in subscriber additions and the overall growth in mobile subscribers during the financial year ending March 07 has been possible due to industry initiatives, forward looking policies of the ministry and the enabling regulation.

Among all the circles, C circles continued to witness the highest rate of growth at 8.7 per cent, followed by Category B circles at 6 per cent. Within the Category C circles, the highest growth was recorded by the Assam Circle (12.4 per cent) followed by N.E. Circle (11.2 per cent).

Amongst the Category B circles, Rajasthan recorded highest growth at (11.13 per cent), followed by Uttar Pradesh (East) at (6.74 per cent).

Amongst Category A circles, Karnataka recorded the highest growth at (5.82 per cent) followed by Tamil Nadu at (5.77 per cent).

The Metro subscribers grew by 3 per cent in the month of March 07. Chennai recorded the highest growth at (4.8 per cent) followed by Kolkata (3.5 per cent).
