Orkut was my first brush with social media like many of you. Facebook and Twitter came later but they completely changed the landscape and made Orkut shut down after a decade of service.

But the founder of the very first web social network, Orkut Büyükkökten is back with a project called ‘Hello’.

Hello.com, a social network that connects you with people and content based on your passions, is an extension of Orkut. As per Büyükkökten, "Hello is the first social network built on loves, not likes. Hello makes it easy for you to connect with people who share your passions. I want ‘Hello’ to being a community where everyone feels welcomed and included and no one feels judged."

You don’t need to provide any external data to sign-up; it just needs access to your contact list to find your friends. You are then served with the option to choose five ‘personas’ you’re interested in, for example, photographer, actor, journalist, foodie, geek, parent, skier, traveler, etc.

Once you sign-in, Facebook-inspired News Feed will pop-up with content posted by other members who share your passions. You can also personalize or customize this feed, by changing the passion category.

Much like a game, Hello also promises 'karma points’ based on the number of posts/comments you make or like, the number of gifts you’ve sent and a number of days you spend on the app. The game gradually goes up to Level 40 and you’re awarded more gifts and coins each time you level up.

Like Snapchat or Instagram, Hello focuses on visual content instead of text-based posts. With a set of tools, you can also modify the background, add text, and even add filters to the image. But unlike Snapchat or Instagram, you have to assign one of the personas to the content that you’re about to post.

Video posting is currently not supported by Hello. However, we can expect to see the same in the near future. With a 2.7 rating on the Google Play Store, Hello is now live on both iOS and Android but is currently available to download in only select countries, and India isn’t one of them.
