NEW YORK: Database software giant Oracle Corp. on Friday said it would cut
between 400 to 800 jobs, mainly its North American consulting and sales
operations. The cuts represent about one per cent to two per cent of its
worldwide workforce of 42,000.
"Oracle is realigning certain areas to be more efficient," the
company said in a statement. The exact number of jobs cut will not be known
because some of those affected may be transferred to other areas of the company,
a person familiar with the situation said.
The move comes on the heels of the Nov. 30 departure of Jay Nussbaum,
Oracle's former head of Oracle Services Industries, which handles sales to
customers in the US government, education and health care, communications, and
other units.
Most of the cuts, which have already begun and will be stepped up next week,
will come from Nussbaum's former area, as well as the company's North American
consulting division, the company said.
