The question we ask here is “are tasks or threads necessary in an operating system?” The short answer is that if time slicing is needed, they are absolutely necessary.

However, time slicing is seldom necessary within one software application. In all other cases, tasks complicate significantly the software architecture without being indispensable.

The ideas are most relevant to Real Time Operating Systems (RTOS) but are not restricted to Real Time. The general purposes behind these concepts are to simplify the software programming of embedded systems and to enhance the real time performance.
