Opera Mini uses 90 pc less bandwidth than other browsers

The common perception of everyone is "Opera makes web browsers only", but we are not, pointed Kamath and further added that it also caters and works on the growing areas like desktop, mobile and connected devices. According to Opera, if Opera were a country, it would be the fourth largest in the world, with more than 300 million monthly users.

Highlighting on the technology behind Opera for Android, Kamath said, "Opera for Android is based on chromium, where the interface is sleek and intuitive with features such as discover and off-road mode." When asked about Opera Mini, Kamath asserted that it is fast, compact mobile web browser, which compresses web pages to 10 percent of their original size.

Some of the features such as speed dial, download manager, smart page with social media integration and works across platforms, he said.

Opera claims that their browsers are capable to run on limited mobile networks and feature compression technology that allows web surfers to experience a significantly faster browsing experience, even on slow networks.

Dwelling upon the new browser - Opera Coast - developed exclusively for the Apple iPad, Kamath said, "Its a new web browser that 's designed to be the perfect match for an iPad." Coast is available for iOS 6 or later platforms. "It dispenses with most old browser conventions, such as back and forward button, and replaces navigation with human gestures," added Kamath.

Sharing some interesting facts about Opera Software and its browser, Kamath added that Opera Mini uses 90 per cent less bandwidth than other browsers, saving about 11,207,180,288 MB in data in a month, which would allow each person in India to read 398 more Facebook pages on Opera Mini or 683 more Twitter pages.

In addition to computers, mobile phones and tablets, Opera also connects over 20 million smart TVs, set-top boxes, media players and game consoles to the Internet so that people can truly enjoy the lean-back internet experience on TVs, he said.

According to Kamath, Opera helps to power the global mobile economy via Opera Mediaworks, world's largest mobile ad platform, which serves 50+ billion ad impressions per month, delivering $400M in revenue to mobile publishers in 2012. Kamath also felt that the digital world was re-organizing around mobile, faster than any other Internet trend, and mobile and tablet were becoming platform of choice among the users.

On consumer browser market, Kamath said, Opera is on track on achieve 500 million users. "As of today, we have 334 million users, which includes 259 million users from mobile, 55 million users from desktop, and 20 million users from devices," he noted.
