Open standards sought for IT

Bangalore: The need and mode of  IT standardization has come under scanner even as Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), is all set to kick start the standardization process with experts apprehending non-tariff barrier entry in disguise.

Participating in a seminar on Information Technology Standardization organized by Manufacturer’s Association For Information Technology (MAIT) experts felt that standardization is needed as it leads to innovation but urged to come out with an open model to ensure no hurdles in the path of growth.

While advocating open standards, Jagjit Bhattacharya, Country Director, Govt. Strategy, Sun Microsystems (I), said standards must be royalty free in perpetuity with open sources licenses. Standards with regulations act as stumbling block to scuttle the progress is what he termed as non- tariff barrier. Coming down heavily on reducing intellect to property he criticized intentional secrets ridiculing the mindless implementation of   Intellectual Properties Rights Act.

Speaking in the seminar Deepak Maheswari, Director- Corporate Affairs, Microsoft India, said standards must be set stressing interoperability so that it leads to innovation as it aimed at.

“Policy makers should see what is important to the citizens before setting standards,” said Venkatesh Hariharan, Head-open Source Affairs, RedHat India.

Briefing standardization plans Rakesh Verma, Additional Director General, BIS, said bureau is about to form a group of 30 organizations that would build standards for IT sector. The group, which would be formed in ten days time, includes ten organizations each from IT, academia and   users such as NGOs, and Govt. deportments.

“ As a first step we will identify documents on standards floated at international level and adopt them. The second would be to identify few areas where we could make our own standards,” said Verma.
