BANGALORE: The alpha version of the successor to Microsoft’s Windows XP, code-named Longhorn, is available on the Internet. The new version is slated to incorporate major changes; Windows Future Storage (Win FS) for better storage, and the enhanced security features that detects malicious programs before they can execute. WinFS, however, is believed to be heavy on usage of system resources.

More impressive is the improved setup utility and procedure for the software. Installation is handled by the new Windows Pre-installation environment, a small operating system that is loaded into your RAM.

The new OS also shows a whole lot of cosmetic changes to the look and feel of the next Windows OS. For instance, you can "stack" music files, contacts and pictures in virtual folders. Digital media is expected to receive a big boost with the new OS.

Microsoft’s software products leaking from its labs is not new. Longhorn had leaked in November 2002. The company had also experienced a similar leak during the alpha stages of Windows XP, then code-named Whistler.

Microsoft officials have confirmed that the leaked version of Longhorn is authentic, but maintain that many crucial changes are yet to be incorporated. The beta version release of the operating system, however, might be months away. Major changes, both cosmetic and otherwise may happen in the meantime.
