Principal Secretary Transport D.S. Jaspal said Punjab would be the first state in the country to go online for issuing RCs and driving licenses.

"Equipment worth over Rs.2.20 crore (Rs.22 million) has already been delivered in the offices of the district transport officers for computerization of the district offices," Jaspal said.

The transport department will use the software 'Vahan' (vehicle) for registration certificates and maintenance of record of vehicles and 'Saarthi' (driver) software for maintenance of records of driving license holders.

Jaspal said issuance of driving licenses and maintenance of record of vehicles constituted 70 per cent of the work of district transport offices.
