CIOL NVIDIA introduces a new initiative 'GeForce GTX with Max-Q Design' at Computex

It is no secret that gaming notebooks have seen very limited development in design. Over the last several years, the makers have been following the conventional design of big, bulky and heavy notebooks. However, NVIDIA is now breaking the stereotype and introducing "lighter, thinner yet more powerful gaming notebooks."

Taking centre stage, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang announced a new initiative called GeForce GTX with Max-Q Design at Computex, a computer expo held annually in Taipei, Taiwan.

Using a GeForce GTX 880M with the same specifications from previous machines, the company claims that Max-Q Designs will offer compelling gaming notebooks with half the weight, nearly a third of the thinness yet still see 3x the performance.

The company said in a press release, "Max-Q, an integral part of NASA's mission to launch a man into space, is defined as the point at which the aerodynamic stress on a rocket in atmospheric flight is maximised. Thus, the design of the rocket is precision-engineered around Max-Q. NVIDIA has applied a similar philosophy to designing gaming laptops, enabling OEMs to build laptops that are 3x thinner with up to 3x more performance of previous generation products."

Targeting the mobile gaming markets, the company is focusing on specific hardware data points to reach this goal.

Based on the NVIDIA Pascal GPU architecture, GeForce® GTX 1080 is manufactured on the leading-edge FinFET 16nm process and features cutting-edge GDDR5X memory. The company claims that Max-Q combines a new way of operating the GPU at peak efficiency, with optimisations such as a low voltage optimised clock curve that wrings out gaming performance while reducing power.

Advanced Thermal Solutions and Optimal Regulator Efficiency

NVIDIA is using the best possible cooling solutions and integrating the best available power regulators targeting efficiency. The advanced thermal solutions allow the GPU to be cooled quickly, and quietly, keeping the GTX 1080 at its peak efficiency curve.

NVIDIA WhisperMode Technology

The company also introduced WhisperMode technology, which intelligently measures the game's frame rate and also configures the graphics settings for optimal power efficiency, reducing the overall acoustic level for gaming laptops. As per the company, WhisperMode will be available soon through a GeForce Experience software update.

MaxQ-designed gaming laptops equipped with GeForce GTX 1080, 1070 and 1060 GPUs will be available starting from June 27.
