Nokia testing servers for corporate email access

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Finnish mobile handset maker Nokia on Monday said it is testing the servers set up in India for providing access to corporate email services to the Indian government.

"What the government is asking for in terms of interception is completely valid. We have already placed the servers. We are testing them with the government agency. It is likely to be completed in three months," said D. Shivakumar, vice president of Nokia India.

However, the company denied to share the investment details.

"The investment is committed to the country," Shivakumar said.

Expressing concerns over possible use of encrypted services by anti-social elements to stir social instability, the Indian government has been demanding interception of encrypted services from all service providers, such as those offered by Canadian firm Research in Motion (RIM), in readable format.

Though RIM has provided the government access to its messenger services, it has maintained that it cannot provide the government the access to its corporate emails as it does not have the technological make-up to do so.
