Nokia to bring 3G features in economy devices

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Nokia India is gearing up to make even its economy devices 3G compatible to leverage the benefit of 3G technology across masses.

“We have very well made inroads among masses. Now, we are not just a device company but also solution company. We have worked on affordability part of the devices for masses, solved the issue of reaching out to the masses and now we are working to monetize our reach. Our economy device are also going to be 3G compatible,” said Jasmeet Gandhi, head-services marketing, Nokia India, in an interaction with CIOL on the sidelines of TIE Entrepreneurial Summit 2010 here.

Gandhi mentioned that Nokia will provide its services platform to developers and companies to reach masses to offer their service.

“We are going to sharpen our focus on applications that we can provide through our devices,” said Gandhi.

Nokia started as a mobile phone company and has now expanded into four groups, namely mobile phones, multimedia, networks and enterprise solutions.

The company has now started providing online applications like e-mail, games, music, navigation and other similar application through its Ovi store.

Since Nokia began shipments of its new Symbian smartphones, starting with the Nokia N8 on September 30 this year, the top downloaded free application globally was 'Q Torch', a utility app that turns your device into a flashlight, by CellApp Technology of India. The top downloaded paid application was 'Angry Birds', the smash hit game, by Rovio Mobile of Finland and the third most popular item downloaded globally was 'Need for Speed Shift HD', a game that delivers the thrill of high-performance racing by EA Mobile of the U.S.

Nokia Qt Software Development Toolkit (SDK) and the Qt SDK combined were downloaded 1.5 million times during this period, as per company's claims.
