Most CIOs have been able to do an excellent job of overseeing IT operations, but very few lead the companies efforts in deriving business benefits frfom IT. This article recommends, what is required - a new style of leader who can find ways for IT to change the company.

Though both CEOs and CIOs seem to agree upon the fact that the following is required: one,more business unit involvement, two greater business accountability and three, IT should change business, rather than just run it. However, where the gap lies is, in the leadership that is required to make these changes.

The article does not suggest the much repeated rhetoric - of CIOs being a part of the strategy table, as it considers the advice too simplistic.What it does suggest, is that CIOs need to direct attention frrom managing IT supply (delivery of IT resource) and toward managing IT demand (helping business innovate through the use of IT)

It also goes on to illustrate as to what demand side leadership consists of - IT discussed in a common, business focused language; widespread business accountability and seeking innovations that help change business.

It recommends the few important practices that can help CIOs make the transition from focussing on operational issues to becoming business leaders:

- Ensure IT is efficient and then make the transition to effectiveness



- Reengineer telationships with business leaders


- Invest business committe with technology oversight

To conclude, the message the article gives out is, that deriving business value from IT requires business leaders who are technologically savvy - hence providing the right opportunity to CIOs to evolve to the next level.
