Som Mittal next Nasscom president

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Som Mittal, senior vice president of HP Global services for APAC and Japan, will take over from Kiran Karnik as the president of Nasscom with effect from Jan 2008.

Harish Mehta, who heads the search committee, announced Mittal's appointment today.

Mehta is currently the chairman of Onward Technologies Ltd and he was also the former chairman of Nasscom.

With his long career spanning 32 years, Mittal has over 18 years of experience in IT industry. Earlier he has worked with Digital Equipment India Limited and Digital Compaq.

An alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad and IIT Kanpur, before joining IT industry in 1989, Mittal spent his early years in the manufacturing and automotive sector.

He has played a leading role in shaping the IT industry in India through playing a leadership role in key Industry forums. He has served as chairman of Nasscom from 2003-04 and he was also the National Council Member and former chairman of Confederation of Indian Industry.

Karnik took charge of Nasscom in August 2001, following the demise of Dewang Mehta.

Karnik won the 'Dataquest Man of the Year' award in 2005.
