Enterprise connectivity is today exposed to varied dimensions like social networking, network redundancy, employee and lifestyle demands and multiple cable cuts

BANGALORE, INDIA: What should a CIO do when faced with undersea cable cuts, like the recent incident, asked a CIO today at a session on Connecting the Enterprise at the fifth edition of CIOL C Change 2008, which commenced here today.

Sukanto Aich from Airtel gave solutions like alternate routes and redundancy as he and others discussed the many issues that CIOs toil with while managing the indispensable called enterprise connectivity.

"Uptime depends on how a network is designed, its architecture and last mile issues. More service provider collaboration with multiple providers will help in driving that. And with social networking becoming imperative all across, there are issues like security, client contract requirements and control that CIOs have to manage as an upshot of enterprise 2.0,” he said.

So while employees demand email and Net as the order of the day, there are ways like special kiosks and supervisor control that CIOs are coming up with. The session that was moderated by Arun Gupta from Shopper's Stop and discussed by panelists like T G Dhandapani from TVS Motors and Aich from Airtel, touched upon various the ramifications of connectivity that haunt a CIO.

“Gone are the days when organisations delved on being self-sustained, today it's all about being connected,” said Gupta.

The session also discussed the future of connectivity that will come up with new platforms like mobile, lifestyle changes and increased user touch points.

Innovation networks are going to take connectivity to a new angle as Dhandapani cited. "Two-wheeler industry is already connecting suggestions and requirements from both internal and external customers and using networking to a new level."

As the session closed, CIOs expressed their demands from connectivity: better uptime- 99.99 levels on delivery and not on paper, no last mile problems and interestingly free bandwidth as well.
