Virtualization technologies for agility, slashing costs

IDC predicts virtualization will be a $20 billion market by 2010 and the main reason for such bullish estimates is cost

BANGALORE, INDIA: An IDC report said that 75 per cent of enterprises that the research firm surveyed recently have invested in some form of virtualization or plan to invest in the next 12 months.

The research firm predicts virtualization will be a $20 billion market by 2010. The main reason for such bullish estimates is cost.

Speaking at a knowledge session on Virtualization at the ongoing CIOL C-Change 2008 in Bangalore, Suresh Menon, product manager, BCS Technology Solution Group of HP, said: "Companies are investing more in virtualization technologies to remain agile. Real technologies offer real time benefits like cost reduction and benefits ranging from dynamics to resources for any enterprise."

Virtualization can help in four broad areas, he said, namely save time, ensure quality, manage energy besides reduce costs.

"Reducing costs is very essential for any organization and virtualization helps by reducing server administration costs by about 29 per cent and for this, the focus is on virtual server environment," Menon said.

The HP Virtual Server Environment (VSE) is an integrated server offering that provides a flexible computing environment to help you maximize the use of server resources. It provides the visualization, configuration, workload policy, and capacity planning tools to optimize the system resources.

Menon said that while there is growing awareness that virtualization can save on costs and resources, the evaluation program is a way to formalize the process, show what the potential return on investment is and get the projects going.

HP focuses on VSE that can help automate all the four main areas. The team from HP demonstrated HP VSE and showed a live platform and a real time scenario to the 100 CIOs present.

It was simulated from data centres in Korea.
