Green IT top priority for Indian CIOs

Fifty five per cent of top 60 India's CIO's have energy efficiency as part of their top three KRAs for 08-09

BANGALORE, INDIA: Green IT is finally perched atop among the agenda of Indian CIOs.

A quick snap survey by Dataquest has found out how Indian CIOs are seriously concerned about making their IT Infrastructure energy efficient to save costs and improve their corporate image.

Out of the 60 CIOs surveyed by Dataquest, 55 per cent of the respondents put the focus on Green IT as the way forward for 08-09.

The survey found that cutting energy to increases op-ex; capex and corporate social responsibility were among the many drivers for the Green shift.

These results were put forward by Prashanto Roy, Group Editor, Cyber Media Publications here today at the CIOL C Change 2008.

"Energy efficiency is part of top three KRAs for CIOs for 08-09," Roy added.

The CIOs, who were surveyed, on an average faced two hours of power cut daily.

Giving a larger picture of Green IT initiatives in India, Roy said the economic sense, rising cost of power, shortage of power, high backup capex were driving the Green initiative among Indian enterprises.

"Growing concern about energy costs, CSR and performance per watt remained major drivers for this focus", Roy said.

"Enterprises are now investing more on TFT monitors as against CRT, buying more laptop as against desktops and focusing more on application consolidation to save costs", added Roy.

CIOs and CTOs across BPOs Telecom, IT services and bank vendors were more concerned about these issues, Roy added.

He said that going forward Green IT would make a great sense for CIOs who face severe power shortage in their enterprises.

"Energy-intensive businesses that generally have low margins are going green," said Roy.

Citing an example of a BPO in Gurgoan, Roy said the BPO was forced to switch to lower power systems after it scaled to 600 seaters in no time.

Roy added that green buildings, natural lighting, efficient air conditioning and solar power also were indicators of increasing focus on going Green.
