BANGALORE: The infamous New Jersey Bill passed against outsourcing work to other countries is to be amended. This was informed by Nasscom Chairman, Som Mittal while inaugurating the ITES-BPO Strategy Summit oragnised by the software apex body.

"The bill is being looked again and might change with reference to outsourcing work to other countries. Other states like Maryland, Connecticuit who were planning to raise a similar bill have also gone back and put it on hold," assured Mittal.

He also informed that Nasscom is meeting up with all the Senators of the state to assure them that it is not a movement of jobs from one country to another but the value addition it brings in terms of cost and quality. This assurance has worked as bills are being re-looked and others are put on hold. Anti-outsourcing campaigns are becoming lesser and India is looked more as ally than a threat.

This is good news to India as the industry was slightly perturbed by the recent anti-outsourcing campaigns in the US and Europe. Concerns were raised over a number of issues, issuance of H1B visas, closure of deals to name a few.

The industry leaders also blamed the media for hyping the issue. "Questions like how many jobs are being moved from the US to India camouflages the job opportunities that is raised for India," stated Vivek Kulkarni, Secretary for IT, Government of Karnataka."

Som Mittal attributed to depressed economic situation and a politically motivated move by the US politicians to have raised the issue. However he was quick to add, "We are not complacent but at the same time we should not be overly concerned."

Jobs cuts are not new in US. Manufacturing, hardware, automobile industries and more recently the airline industries have all gone through the job cuts. Striking a positive chord, Avinash Vashistha of neoIT said that that even if the bill is passed, it may be restricted only to government jobs.
