Intel announced a new series of microprocessors for handheld devices such as PDAs and
next-generation cell phones. The chips, the PXA250 and PXA210 operate at 200- and 400 MHz
respectively.
The new processors will provide portable systems with improved music quality, the
ability to display movies and games. "We want to make this explode and be the next
$100 billion market,'' said Mark Casey of Intel's handheld-computer division. "To
make that happen, you need good clients and a fast wireless connection.'' The first
systems based on the new chips are expected to be available this summer.
The processors use a technology called XScale, which is based on the StrongARM
architecture that Intel acquired as part of a settlement with Digital Equipment Corp. in
1997.
