"In order to increase the competence of designers in India, we need to have many more centres that produce designers," Dr Dua added.

"We are currently working on setting up of a design university in the country.” The government is also upgrading the status of the premier design institute, the National Institute of Design (NID), to a deemed university, to turn it into a center of excellence, he said, at a press meet on 6th CII- NID Design summit organized by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

India needs to promote private design studios. "We plan to set up these studios in mixed land use areas away from industrial areas."

The government also plans to set up an NID center in the northeast of the country. This is likely to come up during the 11th Five-Year Plan, he said.

Another important issue that needs to be addressed is to create more awareness about the design industry within India, as design is a manifestation of the country's own advantages in terms of art, culture and creativity, Dr Dua said. "Goods need to be aesthetically designed, which will come through design consciousness."

The Indian market is going to be so dynamic that the design industry will soon be booming, said President, Idiom Design & Consulting Pvt. Ltd, Viren Razdan. The reason for partnering with CII and NID is that the country is on the threshold of a design revolution.

Director, National Institute of Design, Darlie O Koshy said the three aspects the design industry is looking at are Design and India, Design with India and Design in India.
