NASSCOM SPL: Importance of critical infrastructure

MUMBAI, INDIA: Critical infrastructure plays greater role in today's business. And any kind of threats or vulnerabilities in any form would be highly detrimental to business, said the IT Security experts who attended the NASSCOM India Leadership Forum.

Howard Schmidt, president of Information Security Forum and B J Srinath, senior director and scientist 'G' of CERT In – Ministry of Communication and IT, Government of India, initiated an intriguing discussion focusing on critical infrastructure's security and protection issues here at the Leadership Forum today.

In context to downturn and the IT BPO industry, Schmidt urged the companies to assure their clients and customers about its infrastructure security plan, include it in the legal contracts and share the information.

According to Schmidt, IT BPO companies need to assess its infrastructure across geographies, the criticality of information and assets to determine and quantify the risks mitigations.

On the cost of investment in security, Schmidt said, "The cost of security should not exceed the worth of data or infrastructure. There needs a balance between risk and costs."

Bringing in the Indian perspective, Srinath said India's cyberspace is highly complex and vast. "Threats such as web defacement, data thefts, etc are increasing and there's sophistication in such attacks. Henceforth, IT security in terms of business is very critical and needs collaborative efforts from government agencies and private players," he said.

Further Srinath added that awareness and education is needed at the user end and it can be done by IT professionals that will help to address the threat issues.

"It is the PPT (people process technology) model that educates the users with latest technology and devices," he added.

While concluding the discussion Schmidt said, "When people loose gadgets like cell phone or laptops – they are more concerned with its cost and not the about the worth of data lost."
