MUMBAI: The National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom), the apex body of the IT industry, has completed verification of over one lakh business process outsourcing (BPO) employees and has registered over 30,000 personnel under its national skills registry (NSR).

The association expects to complete at least 50 per cent of the total BPO employees in the country by the end of this year.

According to Lakshmi Narayanan, the newly elected chairman of Nasscom, the organisation was speeding up the process of updating the national skills registry.

“This is a tedious process, as apart from photographing the employees, the body is also fingerprinting them and this is taking considerable time and energy,” he said.

The NSR was being planned after a series of fake resumes surfaced, driving the IT industry into a panicky situation. The registry was aiming to address this, with participation from the industry.

For Narayanan, a dearth of skilled workforce is another issue the organisation would have to look at. Nasscom would be looking at encouraging collaboration between academic institutes and the industry. He hoped that collaboration would help in tiding over the talent crunch.

On the recruitment of a new president, the chairman said that process was already on and the organisation would find a successor to Kiran Karnik soon. Karnik had decided to step down from his role as president, after he attained the age of 60 years.

Nasscom had laid down strict human resource policies that included a retirement age of 60 years. Karnik would continue for another nine more months to enable the organisation to find a successor.

Security would be another concern and focus for the new chairman with a string of initiatives planned for the IT sector in the country.
