BANGALORE: National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) and Business Software Alliance (BSA) recently raided six locations of software resellers in Mumbai as part of its anti-piracy drive.

BSA and Nasscom representatives, in association with the Crime Branch of the Mumbai Police, raided large software resellers, their stocking places and the residence of one of the largest resellers. During the raid, counterfeit software worth Rs 4.8 crores illegally copied onto 1,141 CDs, along with a CD Writer were recovered from the various locations. The software seized included pirated versions of software belonging to Adobe Systems Inc., Autodesk, Inc., Microsoft Corporation, Corel and Macromedia. Several inlay cards for compilation CDs were also seized.

"In order to curb piracy we have initiated a series of actions in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi, Ludhiana and Pune over the past few months. Software piracy is an offence not only affecting large Corporate Industries but also the consumers as they do not get value for their money. Innocent purchasers land up getting counterfeit and substandard products under the belief that they are genuine. Even though at times they may pay less, they do not realize that they have been cheated and are compromising on the quality of the products" said Nasscom president Dewang Mehta.
