BANGALORE: Infosys co-founder and chairman N R Narayana Murthy seems to be
following the footsteps of Bill Gates, so far as the new roles that he has
donned in the company. While continuing as chairman of the board of the company,
he will also add the title of Chief Mentor with effect from March 31, 2002.
Narayana Murthy will, it seems, step down from all the executive roles in the
company.
Almost exactly a year back, Bill Gates stepped down as the CEO of Microsoft to become the
Chief Software Architect of the company. He, too, retains the chairmanship of the company
he co-founded.
According to a company release, in his new role, Narayana Murthy would mentor the core management team in "transforming Infosys into a world-class, next generation corporation providing technology-leveraged business solutions to corporation around the world". He would also work with thought leaders across the world in enhancing the leadership position of Infosys. In addition, he would interact with various institutions across the world in bringing the benefits of IT to every section of the society, an objective dear to every Infoscion, the release added. The announcement was part of the company
releasing its financial results for the third quarter ended December 31, 2001.
Narayana Murthy has handed over the post of CEO to his deputy
Nandan Nilekani, who will continue as president and managing director. Nilekani will assume full management responsibility of the company. Effective
March 31, 2002, S. Gopalakrishnan, who is the deputy managing director, will
also hold the post of chief operating officer, which is currently being held by
Nilekani.
