Motorola: Droid sales 'extremely' strong

CALIFORNIA: Motorola Inc is seeing strong demand for its Droid phone at Verizon Wireless despite the popularity of rival HTC Corp's Droid Incredible, co-Chief Executive Sanjay Jha said on Wednesday.

Jha told reporters after an Executives Club presentation in Chicago that Motorola is suffering from industry wide supply chain constraints similar to those HTC is seeing for its Droid Incredible phone.

Verizon Wireless, a venture of Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc, said last month it was having a hard time keeping up with supply of the Droid Incredible because of a shortage of screens from Samsung Electronics.

"(Droid) sales are going extremely well. If I could build more I'd sell more," Jha said without discussing which components were in short supply.

Jha said this year's phone line-up would include two to four phones with front facing cameras that could be used for mobile video-conferencing. The comment follows two high-profile introductions of phones with such cameras in the last week.

Apple Inc said its next iPhone would have a front-facing camera when it goes on sale June 24.

Sprint Nextel Corp, the No. 3 US mobile service, starting selling EVO, a high-speed phone with video conferencing capability, on June 4.

Jha said he would support the technology even though he had "never been a great believer" in demand for video conferencing.
