Deepak Puri, chairman and managing director of Moser Baer India Limited said that the company aims at consolidating its position in the optical storage market and the peripherals to be introduced shortly will be on the same lines.

“We have more than 9000 out of 22,000 catalogue titles of Indian films, and are releasing about 500 titles every month. This has seen the CD business take the FMCG route by bringing down the prices significantly. Now, the peripherals business will also repeat the same strategy,” he said.

Puri said that though the cost of CDs and DVDs had come down, the rates of CD/ DVD players remain high. “I can afford to have a DVD player, but my driver cannot. Our entry into peripherals will make the DVD players also affordable, a strategy which was successful in our CD/ DVD business,” Puri informed

“We will be importing the peripherals from a South-east country. Once there is an increase in volume of business then we will be looking at setting-up our own plant here,” he said ruling immediate manufacturing plans.

Indications are that Moser Baer will be importing low-cost equipments such as DVD players and then other products such as Webcams from Taiwan.

Through this initiative, the company aims to capitalise on the PC peripheral industry which is pegged at Rs 12000 crores, with current market size of five lakh units per month. “We are aiming at 20 per cent market share with revenue of Rs 8000 crores and will be investing close to Rs 2000 crores in the new venture,” he added.

Moser Baer had recently earlier announced the launch of its Optical Disk Drive (ODD), a Combo drive and DVD writer, which marked the company's foray into the PC peripherals industry. The company already has a huge market share in the USB Drives and Memory Cards market.
