BANGALORE: Monday has beaten other six days of the week to emerge as the most popular day among surfers. According to a study conducted over a period of one year by WebSideStory, Inc. (www.websidestory.com), Saturday and Sunday are the least popular days.

The study points out that Internet use worldwide on any weekday is higher than on the weekends, indicating that people are not spending much of their weekend leisure time online. StatMarket, which is a Web site design and software optimization service, gathers information from more than 50 million Internet users a day to more than 125,000 sites worldwide.

On average, Monday accounts for about 15 per cent Internet traffic for the week worldwide. In contrast, Saturday and Sunday account for the least amount of Internet traffic, with 13.5 per cent, and 13.7 per cent, respectively. Traffic data for this study was gathered between May 20, 2001 and May 18, 2002. Monday is followed in popularity by Friday (14.67 per cent), Thursday (14.50 per cent), Wednesday (14.37 per cent) and Tuesday (14.27 per cent).

"What we’re seeing is that people tend to surf the Internet during the workweek more than at home on the weekends," said Geoff Johnston, vice president of product marketing for StatMarket. "This may imply that much of their personal Web use takes place at work. Or perhaps people have better things to do on the weekend than surf the Internet."
