Microsoft tightens cloud security with Adallom buy

MUMBAI, INDIA: Microsoft has acquired Israel-headquartered cloud security provider Adallom Technologies, a specialist in DLP and GRC security services.

The $320 million acquisition will reportedly help the software giant to serve as basis of Microsoft's projected cyber center in Israel.

The acquisition will boost Microsoft’s cloud business, an enterprise the software major has been focused on over the last few years. Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft, reiterated the company’s commitment to the cloud by announcing large investments—$5 billion in for building data centers in India itself.

Secondly, a specialist in cloud security can go a long way in allaying the fears of customers towards data security, and this should be Microsoft’s prime objective for the acquisition. The company is yet to issue a statement on the acquisition.

According to information available on the company website, Adallom’s threat prevention capabilities focus on identifying high-risk usage, anomalous behaviors and security incidents.

The R&D team at Adallom has created a cloud application security platform that works for any user on any device on any network. Its API integrates into the framework of enterprise cloud applications and patent-pending SmartProxy architecture seamlessly directs users through the Adallom cloud, providing complete control without breaking application functions.

How it secures data on the cloud:

Adallom offers enterprises technology to protect data located on remote servers. According to the company website, it can secure Salesforce.com, Microsoft, Service Now, AWS, Yammer and Google Apps' use of cloud services.

Adallom provides a security cover by providing a layer that envelopes the organizational information on the cloud such that all access to it passes via Adallom's command and control mechanism located in the US and Asia.

So far, Adallom has raised 50 million dollars from venture capital firms Sequoia Capital and Index Ventures, Zohar Zisapel, EMC and HP.
