To make these solutions far more broadly available, the software major also announced that it would work with HCL and other OEM partners for retail availability.

Starting April, HCL will ship 'Windows XP Starter Edition for India' based entry-level desktops and notebooks with an EMI of Rs 399.

These desktops and notebooks will be pre-loaded with Works 8 and other products and services such as Quick Heal anti-virus, education content from Edurite, and broadband access from BSNL and MTNL.

Microsoft India Windows Client director Rishi K Srivastava said, “In the first phase, these solutions will be available in 75 B, C and D class cities across the country and we would be setting up 250 retail outlets in the next 90 days. In the second phase, the solution would be available in 300 cities and we would be setting up 1,000 retail stores in the next 12 months.”

Microsoft Corporation Windows client business senior VP Will Poole said, “PCs need to be affordable, desirable and accessible. Only three percent homes have PC in India. So there is a tremendous growth potential waiting to be tapped in this segment. We have launched versions of Windows XP tailored for the local market in 33 countries in 10 local languages and have witnessed huge growth in those regions. We plan to replicate that success in India also.”
