ISO 27018 was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to establish a uniform, international approach to protecting privacy for personal data stored in the cloud.

Adhering to ISO 27018 assures protection of privacy to enterprise customers in various ways:

  1. Customers stay in control of their data
  2. There is stronger security and protection for data
  3. The customer database is not used for marketing against the users’ wishes
  4. Customers are informed when/if the data is accessed by the government

In an official blog post,  Brad Smith - General Counsel & Executive Vice President, Legal and Corporate Affairs, Microsoft said, "We’re optimistic that ISO 27018 can serve as a template for regulators and customers alike as they seek to ensure strong privacy protection across geographies and vertical industry sectors."
