To protect users from malicious links, Microsoft will be launching a new security feature used on Outlook emails for Office 365 ProPlus desktop users later this month.

The feature which is already available on desktop, web, and mobile platform for its Outlook email client, is now coming to Microsoft's most prominent productivity apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

In a blog post, Microsoft announced, “Our intent has always been to provide our customers with an end-to-end, unified and secure experience across all of Office 365, and this extended capability of Safe Links is an example of our continued step toward this goal.”

“As cyber criminals broaden the scope of attacks beyond email workloads, it’s necessary to extend security capabilities beyond email,” Microsoft further added.

Basically, the feature will display a warning message when the user tries to follow a malicious link from Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.

This feature, however, works differently on Outlook. Once the warning page appears, the user can completely be blocked from reaching the destination by the admin on Outlook. The admin can also view the link user has clicked, or in fact, see all the links user has clicked. Threat intelligence can be obtained either as a part of Office suite subscription or as a standalone service.

Meanwhile, Microsoft said that its Office 365 Threat Intelligence and Advanced Data Governance tools are both now generally available. Threat intelligence can be availed either as a part of Office suite subscription or as a standalone service.
