NEW YORK: Mercury Interactive Corp., whose technology helps monitor software performance, said it had agreed to acquire privately-held Appilog Inc. for $49 million in cash to enhance its performance management technology.

New York-based Appilog makes auto-discovery and application mapping software, which helps companies track, all of the changes they are making when they upgrade or remove applications.

"The technology gives companies a real time map as supposed to a static map," David Murphy, vice president of development, said in an interview.

The deal comes on the heels of several similar acquisitions in the sector. BMC Software Inc., last month agreed to buy Marimba Inc., Symantec Corp., and last year acquired ON Technology. Hewlett-Packard Co. earlier this year purchased Novadigm.

Silicon Valley-based Mercury said it is not changing its estimates for the current quarter due to the acquisition. Mercury bought Appilog, which does not yet have revenue, for its technology.

The transaction is expected to close in June. Mercury said Appilog is a good culture fit because most of its software programmers are based in Israel, as is some Mercury operations.
