LONDON: Fabless communications chip company Marvell Technology Group Ltd. has announced its acquisition of the intellectual property and assets of Diseno de Sistemas en Silicio SA (DS2), a privately-held fabless supplier of powerline communications ICs based in Valencia, Spain.

DS2, founded in 1998, has developed wireline technology based on the G.hn standard, which aims to combine, powerline, coaxial, and phoneline wiring within a single wired home network. The company was also a supplier of ICs for metering, smart grid and Ethernet-over-coax applications.

Marvell has stated that it intends to continue selling DS2 products and support existing customers. It will also develop and integrate DS2 core technology into its existing IP portfolio.

Sources at Marvell say the timing for introducing this innovation was appropriate at this time when the industry is ready to standardize on Powerline technology and consumer demand for new home networking options is rising fast. Powerline technology is a good option even for consumers who already have existing wired or wireless networks since it would enable any wall outlet in a home to serve as a broadband network connection that can send and receive data at high speeds. Consumers can extend the capabilities of their existing networks or construct a totally new stand alone network optimized for streaming media said the statement from Marvell.
