'Look at the car, not the piston-ring'

Scott G McNealy, 48, chairman, president, and CEO of Sun Microsystems, has led Sun almost since its beginnings in 1982. In these 20 years, this is his first visit to India, perhaps the reason for packing so much–across New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai--into four days. But he took time out for an exclusive interview to Dataquest in Mumbai’s Oberoi Hotel.



Known for his tongue-in-cheek humor and Microsoft-baiting, McNealy was as outspoken as ever. But he refused to look ahead into the future of the industry and the war, recession and recovery, voicing his skepticism of all ‘speculation’, predictions, future-gazing.



Sun acts rapidly in the present, he said; it’s an "adaptive, super-reactive corporation, that’s what we use technology for." Market research is always wrong, he adds for good measure
