Clustered computing has been with us for several years. It represents an attempt to solve larger problems, or to solve problems in a more cost effective manner, than the more conventional systems of the time.
Initial efforts in Linux clustering have been in the high performance computing (HPC) area, and the current Intel Xeon™, AMD Opteron™, and IBM POWER™ high clock rate servers will continue to make this area vital. High-availability solutions for Linux clusters are now available from several Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), and span a range of capability and complexity. |
