Kerala to launch PG Diploma in e-Governance

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, INDIA: In a first-of-its-kind initiative by any state government in the country to promote a career in e-Governance, the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Kerala (IIITM-K) and the Institute of Management in Government (IMG) have joined hands to launch of a Post Graduate Diploma course in e-Governance.

The two institutes have developed the course for capacity building at the individual level to create a good number of trained professionals to manage e-governance projects of the government.

The focus of the course will be on e-Governance through developing foundations in IT, Management, Government Process, Re-engineering and Change Management and has been designed in line with the recommendations of the Administrative Reforms Commission for promoting e-Governance.

According to Ajay Kumar, Secretary-IT, Kerala, “We have launched this course with the intention to broaden the scope of e-Governance in the state through various sectors and services and generate human resources with the right skills, knowledge, aptitude and leadership qualities for effective implementation of e-Governance projects.”

The eligibility for this course would be a bachelor’s degree in any discipline with computer proficiency. Ajay Kumar added that students enrolling for this course will have the opportunity to build their careers in Government IT and e-Governance projects, software industry, consulting companies, national and state government IT organizations.

The government, in an effort to help participants align the outcome of the course with their areas of interest, the classroom sessions have been divided into core courses and elective courses. They have been grouped under e-Governance, management and IT disciplines. The candidates are required to undertake a project work in the final semester.

The programme also includes lab sessions in IT and soft skills. The selection will be through a written test followed by an interview, said an official. The total intake of the programme is 45 of which 20 are from open quota, 15 are reserved for government officers and 10 for sponsored candidates. SC, ST applicants will be eligible for reservation as per government rules, the official added.
