The safety or panic app, 'Suraksha' will help women in distress to alert police for help, as it is linked to the police control room and patrolling vehicles in the city.

The app enable users to send alerts directly to the police control room and two contacts in their phone. During an emergency, an SOS message will be sent to all of them which will read as 'I am in problem, therefore come and help me."

Once the SMS is received, the police patrol vehicles will try tracing the location by tracking that person's google location. The location could be found through the live vehicle tracking system also.

Along with the mobile app, the state government has also flagged off 51 patrol vehicles of the city police from the state secretariat. The patrolling vehicles equipped with the Global Positioning System (GPS) and cameras for the staff at the police control room to monitor the video feed will be manned by three policewomen.

The vehicles will be posted at places where lots of women work or live - like colleges, hostels, or BT and IT firms.

"We have identified the hotspots in the city where women are more vulnerable. They could be garment workers who are the lowest level in our economic strata. It could be the high-end Central Business District where there are pubs and bars," said Police Commissioner, Praveen Sood.

He further added, "The combination of hoysalas and the Suraksha app will make the police more accessible not just to women in distress but also to the citizens in general. We are recruiting more women personnel, and once we have adequate numbers, we will assign them to all the pink hoysalas."

The app has already been downloaded more than 5,000 times, and it is available on both Android and iOS platforms.
