The Union Minister

for External Affairs and Electronics, Jaswant Singh gave the awards for

Excellence in Electronics-1997.

Addressing a function

organized to present the awards, the Minister said India should not allow

the opportunities opened up by the revolution in informatics-"that has

not just arrived at our doorsteps, but is in our midst"-to slip away.

The awards had been

instituted in 1990 to boost the morale of the industry and encourage it

to strive for excellence in the various sectors of electronics. Awards

have been instituted in eight categories, with each category having two

prizes-the first, a silver cup and the second a silver plate.

Giving details about

the qualifying criteria for being considered for awards, Ravindra Gupta,

Secretary, DoE, said that the performance of the past three years was

taken into account during the evaluation of the nominations.

The overall performance

is measured by qualitative and quantitative parameters. The top award

for consumer electronics went to Kalyani Sharp India Ltd, Shirur, Pune

and the second prize in the same category was bagged by BPL Ltd, Bangalore,

which also walked away with the first prize for computer and related products.

In the instrumentation

and industrial electronics category, the first award went to Coimbatore-based

Premier Polytronics Ltd while Industrial Electronics bagged the second

award. Cochin-based Nortpack Fibre Optics Pvt Ltd bagged the first award

in the Professional Electronics category.

HBC Flextech Ltd,

Hyderabad walked away with the first prize in Electronic Components and

Materials. The second prize in this category went to Magtronic Devices

Pvt Ltd, Solan. In the computer software category, Tata Consultancy Services,

Mumbai, bagged the first prize and NIIT Ltd walked away with the second

prize in the same category.

The top honors in

the R&D Electronics went to Electronics Corporation of India Ltd, Hyderabad,

and the second prize in the same category went to Elico Ltd, Hyderabad.

The Human Resources

Development (HRD) in Electronics award for the DOEACC `O' level went to

KK Business Computers Pvt Ltd, Kanpur. And the other HRD award in the

DOEACC `A' level-was bagged by JLJ Financial and Management Consultant,

Faridabad.
