It's mankind vs. Microsoft says McNealy

BANGALORE: Scott McNealy plays to the gallery. “This is mankind vs. Microsoft. And we’re winning.” As always, Scott McNealy was high on anti-Microsoft tirade, as he was addressing the Sun Tech Days Developer Conference, in Bangalore.

His digs at Microsoft evoked gleeful laughter from the 2000-odd developers in the hall. So did the short anti-Microsoft film that was aired just before the address.

“J2EE and .NET are the two most important multi-million developer platforms and both these are the only two major platforms that are gaining share. But the raging difference is that J2EE runs on every server in the world — except one. And we all know which one that is”, he said.

“Microsoft is scared. The court has passed the “must-carry Java” order on Microsoft XP. They are appealing. It’s clear they are scared of us. Why else does Microsoft block Java applets and allow Outlook macros in XP. No one needs to wean people away from .NET. Microsoft’s MSN strategy will drive them away. The viruses are helping”, he added.

Sun’s new catchphrase is the “Internet of things”. Internet in cars, your office in your mobile — this could be the next big thing. “But then, we’ve gone a long way to go before the web tone becomes the dialtone.”

That Sun and McNealy are wooing the developer community is obvious. “Developers are our no.1 constituency. Register with the Sun website. Write to us more ”, McNealy said.
