The company which had professed a goal of one hundred million users by the end of the fiscal year has impressively traversed the half way mark in less than three months of official launch. Notably, Bharti Airtel had 41 million 3G and 4G customers as of September 30.

As for the 50 million user base, Airtel reached the same milestone in 12 years while Vodafone and Idea took 13 years each. Moreover, this also means that the subscriber base of Jio has already reached one-fifth that of Bharti Airtel, which had 262.67 million mobile subscribers in October.

Jio which is offering free voice calls and data until the end of this year has been reportedly adding six lakh customers per day. Sources also told ET that Jio is seeing an adoption rate of nearly one thousand customers per minute, far more than what was forecast.

While Jio’s launch was widely acclaimed amongst masses, the latest entrant into the telecom market has given sleepless nights to competitors like Airtel, Vodafone, and Idea forcing them to slash their prices as well.

Reliance Jio’s call drops and call failures have also improved of late with incumbent operators releasing additional PoIs.

Jio is also preparing to launch feature phones with a price tag of Rs 1000 in rural areas and tier 2,3 markets. The phones will be 4G enabled, bundled with unlimited voice, video calling, and several other Jio services. The feature phones will also support Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology out of the box.
