Would 2010 be very different from 2009 on the area of IT spends?
As far as IT and manufacturing are concerned, IT has taken a back seat last year, more so because of the big fetish for cost cutting. But a lot depended on how some CIOs could still manage. If they could convince management that this is in fact the real time to spend, slowdown doesn’t matter then.

How much did it impact your company?
There was no major impact for us. We knew it was a good time for focusing on IT.

And what is the direction next?
This year we earmarked Rs six crore as Budget, and out of that we have managed Rs four crore already in many areas. Quick MIS implementation, power projects implementations etc, apart from support functions have been our focus.

Does business and IT really sync well in a manufacturing industry?
In this industry specially, IT may not take the top position in business’s pecking order but it’s definitely around, may be at fourth or fifth position.

How exactly does IT deliver?
Many areas are important. From transactions, intelligence, to data security, and management reporting, IT has a big scope.

Do the traditional mindsets affect or increase a CIO’s challenges?
If it’s a real IT company then the story is different. Otherwise a CIO’s role is more of marketing, and that too two-pronged –to the user, as well as to the Management.
