ALEXANDRIA, Va.: The growth of information technology jobs accelerated in July, signifying a strong technology employment market in an environment of weak overall employment.

According to a monthly index of IT jobs developed and published by TechServe Alliance, a collaboration of IT services firms, clients, consultants and suppliers, the number of IT jobs grew by 9,700 in July to 3,875,500.

IT employment has increased by more than 63,000 jobs, or 1.7 percent, since January when technology hiring began to rebound. While the number of IT jobs created in July 2010 was almost 1.0 percent higher than in July 2009, overall private-sector job growth is down from a year earlier.

"Despite a generally anemic employment environment, IT employment continues to show strength.  With July's growth, IT employment has increased in each of the last seven months," said Mark Roberts, CEO of TechServe Alliance.

"While IT employment would not be immune should the recovery derail, at present we remain very bullish on continued growth in the sector for the foreseeable future," he added
